MANDATE

Echo House is a non-profit artistic collective dedicated to fostering collaboration and community through interdisciplinary artistic creation. Echo House facilitates artistic research projects, workshops, performances, expositions, poetry readings, screenings, bookclubs, zine launches and more. In all of our activities we remain focused on the relational and therapeutic potential of artistic creation. Meanwhile we are committed to amplifying a diversity of voices from underrepresented demographics. Echo House is a space for listening.

Echo House seeks to undo the model of the artist as a professional and art as a commodity. Echo House welcomes everyone as an artist, a teacher and a student. We are not a label, a venue, a gallery or a brand. Echo House offers a relational platform for creative experimentation, emphasizing process over product. We seek to create an ambiance of care and support in which the artist can take control over their own means of expression. This involves providing access to space, equipment, materials, resource sharing, networking, production support, etc. BUT ALSO INVOLVES PROVIDING inspiration, play, leisure, laughter, food, good coffee, literature, community, solitude, peace of mind, physical security, a little fresh air…

To these ends, Echo House operates Café Les Renards, a cooperatively run café and library. All proceeds from the café support our artistic projects and community activities. The café serves home-made meals made with fresh ingredients from our rooftop garden. We partner with local farms and community gardens to utilize surplus produce, allowing us to keep our prices accessible. Our “chili communautaire” meal is always offered on a donation basis, which can be a non-monetary donation. We serve coffee roasted locally by 94 celcius, featuring fair trade beans sourced from women-operated farms. Our bilingual library features a wide range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, theory and children’s books, and our zine library hosts a wide range of locally produced texts. Most of all, the cozy atmosphere of the café aims to nurture the creative process and the relationships that sustain it.

Echo House is a member of the Art Hives network, and a partner of SenseLab.
